Details of my first impressions…...

I was browsing PSN today and I saw that Redout Lightspeed Edition was on sale for £15 (was orginally £35) so I thought why not? So I made the purchase and started racing.

So far after my first couple of practice races and career events I must say I’m really enjoying the game, it plays similar to Fast Racing Neo on the WiiU but with a power-ups mechanic similar to WO except not random and you can only equip two at a time.

The visual presentation is stellar and I love the sense of speed they give you from all of the effects on the HUD and how the ships and tracks interact with each other. I’m also digging the Redout control scheme of using the left stick to steer and right stick to strafe and manage pitch.
Those who know me well are aware that I play WO with motion controls on for pitch because I much prefer keeping my steering and pitch relegated as two separate inputs rather than being done with the left stick. Makes it easier to control multiple handling commands at once for me. Gameplay is also super smooth and fast which is a bonus. Customisation is solid too and the upgrades and progression really do make the game a unique experience.

There also seems to be a tonne of content which is great, but I’m hoping it won’t be a grind or repetitive in nature like WO’s campaigns.

THE SPEEEEEEEED!!!! I LOVE IT ^^

The only gripes I have so far is the ships models are meh, they look bland and super basic compared to the environmental details and even WO has more detailed and interesting looking craft. They all adopt a sort of Pod Racer design where the hull isn’t one piece but instead several components flying together (like Pod Racer’s from Star Wars). I’ve never been a fan of these designs but that’s just my bias :P

The strafing mechanic seems to not do much for me, its nowhere near as pronounced as WO’s airbrakes so the ships feel like Piranhas to me. While I love Piranha as I like heavier handling ships in general in these games, Redout’s handling feels very heavy and drifty meaning some of the tracks I’ve struggled to maintain good racing lines at high speed (you can see that in the Alaska race in the end). However I’m still only using class 1 and 2 craft so this could change as I progress through the game.

Music is okay for the most part, but the music playing during the Alaska race is freaking awesome!

Overall first impressions are great, will defo be playing more of this game. Perhaps when I’m brave enough I’ll step into the online competitive scene and see if I can make some videos for the future.

As always, thanks for watching! ^^
