Robert Wadlow, the tallest man ever recorded, stood at an incredible 8 feet 11 inches. Born on February 22, 1918, in Alton, Illinois, to Harold and Addie Wadlow, Robert was the eldest of five children. From an early age, his extraordinary height set him apart. By the time he was just 8 years old, he had already surpassed his 5-foot-11 father.
At 12, Robertâs remarkable height caught the attention of a film crew, who documented him towering over his classmates at 7 feet 2 inches and excelling on the basketball court. By the age of 17, he had grown to 8 feet 4 inches and wore a size 37 shoe, a clear reflection of his rapid growth caused by hypertrophy of his pituitary gland, which resulted in an overproduction of growth hormone.
Unfortunately, Robertâs extraordinary height came at a cost. His body continued to grow, placing immense strain on his health. At 22 years old and 8 feet 11 inches tall, Robertâs life was tragically cut short. A faulty leg brace caused an ankle infection, which worsened despite medical intervention, including surgery and a blood transfusion. On July 15, 1940, Robert passed away peacefully in his sleep.
Known as the âGentle Giant,â Robert Wadlow left a lasting impression on all who met him. Despite the challenges of his condition, he lived with dignity and kindness, becoming a symbol of resilience and the extraordinary capabilities of the human body.
