Replay Value is Nonsense
1,508When I choose a video game to play, I balance a ton of factors against one another until I sift out the misfits, and am left with one matching the time and place I’m looking to play it in. Factors can range from main story length, to genre, to whether or not it’s an indie- you name it. But I’ve noticed I’ve never really cared much for one, particular, popular criteria: Replay Value. I see it mentioned in all sorts of places; from reviews, to tweets, to press kits, replay value is a highly sought after quality in video games, and it’s often what many game publishers will pride themselves on ensuring in their products. As a perfect human being with absolutely no flaws whatsoever, this dissonance between my feelings and that of an industry I project my identity onto was concerning. I did a little check in with myself about why I’ve gradually grown out of needing games to have replay value. Was I too old and therefore too busy with other responsibilities to care for replay value? Maybe I prefer to play a game once and move onto the next thing- whether or not I finished it of course. This deeply reflective process leading to my third eye opening and revealing to me the secrets I’d worked so long and hard to understand happened over the lengthy course…of a two-hour Twitch stream I was doing at eleven in the morning. Half-asleep. And hungover. But it felt like I had been streaming that day, for months. And in in-game time, that might as well be years. Joking aside, I really did come to a funny conclusion about it live on one of my 4-day a week Twitch streams. Replay Value is made-up. Replay Value doesn’t exist. The phrase “Replay Value” Is Nonsense.
