Today’s episode is Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Build 8176) running inside macOS Mojave using VMware Fusion.

This build is the last build to ever use the start button and the Windows Vista/7 shutdown sound until it got removed in Build 8195. It is also the second build to use the name “Windows 8”, hence “Windows 8 Beta” as the OS name on the desktop and winver. The first build to use that was Build 8140.

WARNINGS:

- VMware Compatibility:
The VMware compatibility must be set to version 9.x in order to install this build. Otherwise, a bugcheck will occur, making Windows not boot.

- Broken xHCI Driver:
This build appears to have a broken xHCI driver, which causes the BSOD. To fix that, disable USB 3.0 on your BIOS, UEFI, or on a VM. Or just remove it to make this build work.
