A 44-year-old grandmother was sentenced to 10 years in jail in the death of her 9-month-old grandson, who ingested heroin. Laurie Taylor, of Curtis Bay, and her two daughters - one of them 17-year-old Alexus Lorraine Taylor, the mother of the baby - drove to the city on July 26, 2019, to buy four capsules of heroin, according to Anne Arundel County police.

She divided up the capsules between her daughters, but when they got home, they found one of the capsules was missing.

After failing to find it, Laurie Taylor and Alexus Taylor drove back to buy more heroin.
The infant, 9-month-old Niyear Taylor, stayed home with his aunt, said police.
When the two women returned home at about 1 a.m., they learned that the infant was having problems breathing and would wake up crying, screaming, and wheezing, said police. Laurie Taylor said she had questioned whether Niyear had ingested the missing heroin capsule, and she and Alexus discussed taking him to the hospital but instead went to sleep.
The baby was found unresponsive in the morning. Medical personnel wasn't able to resuscitate him, and he was pronounced dead at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
A search warrant in August at the baby's home turned up more than 100 empty heroin capsules, with powdery substances in every room and inside the baby's diaper bag, said police. The baby was determined to have died from ingesting heroin and fentanyl, and the death was ruled a homicide. Laurie Taylor was sentenced to 25 years in prison with all but 10 years suspended for one count of manslaughter and one count of second-degree child abuse.

“The death of this innocent baby due to the reckless behavior of his family members is beyond unconscionable,” said State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess in a statement. “The defendant and her daughter chose to purchase the heroin, use heroin, and then fail to get medical help for nine-month-old Niyear after he had ingested their heroin which directly led to his death. Their actions show how addiction does not only affect the users but can fatally impact the most vulnerable in our household.
