Here's my second video on Cthon! This playthrough was on easy to see how lucky I could get. Cthon is a game I always return to for its amazing atmosphere. The low-resolution graphics mixed with dark ambient sounds is like peering into a dimension of horrors. Given its limits, procedural generation works well to give it replayability. Are you new to this game? Well I have included a description of the game I made for my first video below!

As a SigmaCorp surveyor, you are mandated to investigate a garbled signal from the nearly-failed colony of Pythos. This distant colony is kept together by bare-bones administration whose dedication is akin to a religious fervor. There is no communication from the colony and, as you attempt to land your ship, an abnormal electrical disturbance disrupts the landing procedure. The botched landing process heavily damages your ship. You discover the colony is more technologically advanced than described, thus could repair your ship. However, the colonists appear to be missing. Replacing them are disfigured hostile creatures apparently controlled by an entity with unnatural power. Your survival depends on salvaging any useful technology within the colony while enduring their onslaught. Further, escape will not be possible until the electromagnetic disturbance has been eliminated.

Cthon is a retro-inspired first person shooter with procedurally generated levels. Although procedural-generation is often inferior to hand-made levels, here it works in the game's favor due to the wolfenstein-like geometry. Further, due to the permadeath aspect of this game, having procedural generation really helps with the replayability. You have three weapons, which can be upgraded throughout the game (depending on which power ups that procedurally appear). There are also three player classes to choose from which focus on each of the weapons (rifle, melee, or missiles). Further, power ups appear for health, speed, ammo capacity, and armor. The atmosphere of this game really shines. Here, the graphics are pixel-perfect and gritty. Also the music is hauntingly dark where some of the soundtrack was made by the artist Burning Mir. It really sets up the feeling of being trapped and alone on a rotting space colony with horrors hidden in the darkness. It's truly a unique experience. This game may not be for everyone, but it is what I play when I want to chill out.
