[Synopsis]

This video shows you how to configure and use the NEC PC-88 emulator on Retroarch. The first NEC PC-88 computer was released into the market in 1979, and it was produced until 1989. This computer used a licensed copy of the Zilog Z80 CPU, and it was called the NEC μPD780C on this computer. This computer used a processor that was fabricated by the same company, and this helped bring down the cost of this computer. Also, NEC produced a lot of the components that went into this computer. The Zilog Z80 was a very popular processor developed in 1976, and it was used for many applications from military to consumer electronics. Another computer that used this was the Spectrum ZX80, MSX, and on many arcade boards of the late 1970s to the mid 1980s.

The NEC PC-8801 was a very successful machine, it was a popular computer in Japan, and it was a commercial success, like its older 16 bit brother (NEC PC-9801). By 1987, 8 bit computers and video game consoles were on its way out. Never the less, this computer had a pretty long lifespan of nine years. This was during a period of history when you saw rapid technological progression, it was a time when we entered the digital or information age.

The NEC PC-88 wasn't a business computer, it was mostly bought by hobbyists and gamers. This is why this computer had a lot of great games on it. The best feature on this computer was the audio, and the graphics were also very impressive. Later models of the PC-8801 could display resolutions of 640 x 200 with 256 colors out of 65,536 colors. Standard VGA on a IBM PC could display about 256 colors out of 262,144 colors at a resolution of 320 x 200. At a resolution of 640 x 480, VGA could display about 16 colors, so the later models of the PC-8801 were clearly superior in terms of hardware capability compared to a standard IBM PC or IBM PC clone. Sound synthesizers for the IBM PC world didn't see wide scale use until 1989. Having better hardware and better software developers gave the PC-8801 an edge when it came to gaming compared to IBM PC clones. The 1980s was a time in history when you had many different computer platforms competing against each other. There was so many variety of computers in the 1980s compared to today.
