Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a 2018 action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft. As the eleventh major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and a successor to 2017's Assassin's Creed Origins, Odyssey continues the franchise's shift towards a more RPG-centric gameplay style, emphasizing combat and exploration over stealth. The game is set during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta from 431 to 422 BC, where players control a Spartan mercenary—either Alexios or Kassandra—who fights on both sides of the conflict while seeking their family and battling the enigmatic Cult of Kosmos. Naval combat, a staple in previous titles, also returns prominently in Odyssey.
The game is played from a third-person perspective and features a vast open world based in ancient Greece, which players can traverse on foot, horseback, or by ship. Alongside the main story, players can engage in various side missions, explore significant landmarks, clear fortresses and camps, delve into tombs and shipwrecks, and hunt for hidden treasures. Collectibles and crafting resources like iron ore, wood, leather, metal, and precious gems can be gathered throughout the game. Additionally, players can participate in gladiatorial arena battles and complete time-limited bounties and contracts. Odyssey introduces two gameplay modes: Guided mode, which provides direct waypoints to objectives, and Exploration mode, which requires players to deduce locations using clues from NPCs. The game also continues the modern-day story arc of Layla Hassan, introduced in Origins, who uses the Animus device to relive the mercenary's memories in search of a powerful artifact.
