Released in December 2019, THQNordic has begun a project to remake the classical Gothic games, beginning with the 2001 original. Met with mostly positive reviews on Steam overall, the task at hand must take into account many different factors that together created the original experience: ambiance, plot, graphic quality in context of what is available, and quality of music, to name only some. There is a feedback feature built into the teaser as well, allowing players to actively participate in improving the game in the coming months.
Movement is standard W, A, S, and D, with other controls having very few similarities to the original game. In particular, the fighting mechanics are unusual and take some getting used to. While timing technically is used for successful (or unsuccessful) offensive and defensive actions in combat, the system relies more on preparing for an action and executing the action. More than a second is provided for choosing a direction in which to try to block, for instance.
