An option select is a set of "overlapping" inputs that lead to multiple outcomes. When the game reads these inputs and the gamestate, it'll pick the most favorable result for us. This cuts down on risk and ideally makes certain techniques infallible.

Chainsaw swipes are long, and the game only checks if you're in range for a kill the instant you press. If you whiff on Nightmare you're probably dying. By holding the fire button during the chainsaw's recovery, you can act about half a second later. But we can do better!

The Crucible can cut the chainsaw's recovery down to practically nothing and turns every swing into an option select. Switch to the Crucible and you'll completely cancel the animation. If you were in range the instant you pressed, Doomguy will follow through. But if you weren't, you can react to the swap and opt for a Crucible swing instead.
