Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, also known as Ninja Gaiden Σ 2, is a redefined version of Ninja Gaiden 2, developed by Team Ninja, due for release on October 1, 2009 for PlayStation 3. It will not be designed by Tomonobu Itagaki, who has since left Team Ninja after developing Ninja Gaiden 2, instead Yosuke Hayashi will be producing and directing it, director of the first Ninja Gaiden Σ.
In an interview at the 2009 GDC, it was revealed that the game will feature two additional playable characters: Ayane and Momiji (from Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword). The game will also feature new enemies and large-scale bosses, an online co-op mode and Trophy support.
A trailer released for E3 '09 shows Rachel (from Ninja Gaiden ) as a character in the game. Her playability has been confirmed for both offline and online play during an E3 09 interview.
It has also been confirmed that the PS3 version will contain less bloodshed and gore-related violence, in comparison to the Xbox 360 version; Hayashi questioned if violence was the way to go.
NGS2 will support both online and offline co-op mode. However, in offline mode, the second character is CPU-controlled and that character cannot be player-controlled.
Gamers who also pre-order the Collector's Edition through GameStop will get a mini-guide and a in-game comic book. Priced $10 more than its usual $59. Though either version of the game lets a player get a downloadable costume.

Ninja Gaiden (忍者外伝?) is a series of video games by Tecmo featuring the ninja Ryu Hayabusa as it protagonist.
The series was originally known as Ninja Ryukenden (忍者龍剣伝, Ninja Ryūkenden?, lit. "Legend of the Ninja Dragon Sword") in Japan. The word "Gaiden" in the North American Ninja Gaiden title means "side-story" in Japanese, even though the Ninja Gaiden series is not a spinoff of a previous series. The original arcade version and first two NES games were released as Shadow Warriors in the PAL region.
The series gained popularity on the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System for its tight action-platform gameplay, catchy music and, according to G4's X-Play, was also the first console game to have the story presented in cinematic cutscenes. The 8-bit trilogy was enhanced for the 16-bit Super NES in 1995. A new game titled Ninja Gaiden, was released in 2004 as a 3D action game on the Xbox, developed by Team Ninja, the makers of Dead or Alive. The franchise of Ninja Gaiden is well-known for high degrees of difficulty, the original NES version and the Xbox revival in particular.
