Review- You can skip this game & play Suikoden 2 instead if you want. 5mins saved, yw
EDIT: you DON'T need the Suikoden 1 save data in order to get the best ending in Suikoden 2
Why I think this remaster sucks:
This Remaster SUCKS! Suikoden 1 Gate Rune HD Remaster is an example of WHAT NOT TO DO.

#SuikodenIHDRemaster
A 1995 classic, well-beloved, political, turn-based JRPG that’s been remastered to modern platforms. The story follows the 107 Stars of Destiny and the person that unites them, in order to overthrow the Empire.
Main QoL added for Remaster: *Auto Save, Fast-forward Battles, Difficulty Options
(*more on GAMEPLAY part of review)
TLDR: 7/10 ⭐️
If you plan on playing Suikoden 2 (which many fans consider as the BEST), make sure to play this one first so you can carry your save over with some added benefits
(I won’t be making comparisons to the original, but rating it as a game remastered + released in 2025)
**VISUALS/WORLD**
✅ Graphically, a well done HD Remaster
✅ character art have been beautifully re-drawn
➖the Game is set in 1 region of the country, don’t expect diff biomes
The game looks great. A bit of a plain world map, city, dungeon design, but layout has been kept 1:1 to the original
**GAMEPLAY**
✅ fast-paced Turn based battles with 6 characters at a time
✅ ⚔️REMASTER⚔️ added fast forward options
✅ 1-on-1 story duels 🤜✋✌️-type
✅ army/war battles 🤜✋✌️ -type
✅ Great level up system makes leveling other characters fast & easy
✅ basic base building to hold your 108 Stars of Destiny.
❌ Inventory management is HORRIBLE
❌ QoL added to the remaster feels like it’s been added w/o thought
❌Auto-Save added ONLY SAVES in areas that already has a save spot, so it happens SUPER RARELY. Do NOT rely on this AT ALL
❌Difficulty Options are useless, game is easy, PLAY it ON HARD for free Trophy 🏆
❌Fast-Forward battles only work in the group 6 v 6 battles (none during army battles) and you have to press ⏩ during each battle
Probably one of the best aspects of the Suikoden series. With it’s mixture of regular JRPG turn based battles, the gameplay tells the story of the hardships as a group, individually, and as an army.
However, the game was poorly “REMASTERED” in terms of QoL with many QoL features that could have been added.
**STORY**
✅ Some characters show up in the 2nd game
✅ Save State carries over with benefits
➖ Regular Good guys v. Bad Guys with a polical flair
➖ 108 Stars of Destiny didn’t get a chance to shine in terms or story/character development
➖ Very Linear story telling & progression
Any fan will tell you that the story is what sets the Suikoden Series story apart. This first installment feels like a taste of what could be as it’s got great ideas and potential, but feels rushed or incomplete.
The series being brought over to modern platforms allows for fans to relive their nostalgia as well as share their love of the series to new fans, however, the remaster does a poor job of adding modern, expected QoL features which may turn off gamers that doesn’t have an emotional attachment to this game.
A game worth playing, as your save carries over to Suikoden 2, which is considered as the cream of the crop.
