REVIEWING EVERY GAME BOY GAME RELEASED IN 1991 (PART 2) - POCubed Omnibus #8
The second chunk of 1991 games might not have the name recognition value of Operation C and Parodius, but there are still a few real highlights of the Game Boy library.
This quarter-ton seems to favour arcade-style screen-based platformers in the Bubble Bobble vein, with the truly excellent Spanky's Quest and the nearly as excellent Snow Bros Jr. vying for the title of cutest playable characters in that category. It's also the turn of a trio of the earliest turn-based strategy titles, and they're all rather excellent Japanese exclusives - Game Boy Wars and Super Robot Taisen are two fab campaigns, but the hero of the piece is the first Little Master title: Raikouban no Densetsu, which is one of the Author's favourite Game Boy games of any description, period. We really needed that 'Doomsayer' port. Which numbskull decided to cancel it?!
There are of course some turds in the proverbial punchbowl - namely The Hunt for Red October and Castelian, two back-to-back titles that offer nothing but misery and overly-difficult gameplay. Sanrio Carnival is equally disappointing, somehow making the characters from the Hello Kitty Universe ugly.
