A Royal Navy ship has thwarted a pirate attack in the Gulf of Aden. RFA Fort Victoria- currently working on NATO's counter-piracy operation 'Ocean Shield- was alerted to a suspicious vessel heading towards shipping lanes in the area. Fears that the 12,000-tonne tanker Liquid Velvet was going to be used as a mothership to attack merchant ships triggered a pursuit by Fort Victoria. She circled the vessel and deployed a Lynx helicopter until the pirates were forced to head back to their anchorage in Somalia. Liquid Velvet was seized by bandits last year. RFA did not attempt to board the tanker due to safety concerns for the 23 crew held hostage.
