Don't run away in terror when you see the horribleness that is the rFactor 1 default content as you'd be missing out on what is really the most developed platform currently and will continue to be for a year or two more, at least. May not be the "sexy" game, but it gets the job done.

Buy rFactor 1 from ISI directly :

Buy rFactor 1 on Steam :

Get a Steam key from your non-Steam game so you can run non Steam and non Steam rFactor 1 at the same time.

"Multiple" installs on Steam: (A must for modding IMHO)

To run multiple installs for non steam you just run the installer again and point it into a different directory.

My suggestion is non Steam is better due to the moddability. Technically it's just as moddable, but keeping mods separated will keep your load times very short as well as keep mods from stepping on one another and causing issues from time to time. I've done it both ways over the years (one giant install versus several small installs) and believe me, small installs are the way to go.

I'd rather double click an icon to select which mod to load up with all my settings and everything than to muck around with command lines as well. It's just easier.

The Steam Version of the game really serves just two purposes. It puts the game in your library so when you fire up Steam to play something it yells "HEY PLAY ME AND DRIVE COOL CARS N STUFF" as well as 6 controller support. I'd recommend several small installs for mods you like, and then keeping your Steam install for your favorite mod.
