ONE-WAY SLAB (See Section 407, NSCP 2015)
Reinforced concrete slabs are large flat plates that are supported at its sides by reinforced concrete beams, walls, columns, steel beams, or by the ground. If a slab is supported on two opposite sides only, they are referred to a one-way slabs since the bending occurs in one direction only. If the slab is supported on all four sides, it is called two-way slab, since the bending occurs in both direction.
If a rectangular slab is supported in all four sides bu the long side is two or more times the short side, the slab will, for all practical purposes, act as a one-way slab, with bending occurring in the short direction. A one-way slab is considered as a wide, shallow, rectangular beam.
