Combining elements from several different genres, Rising Lords at its core is a turned-based strategy game. The other genre elements include card, city building, resource management and hex board games.

I started with the tutorial which also provides the back and lead-up story via an animated video sequence to the campaign mode. The video and art style are spot-on for the medieval setting of Rising Lords, but once gameplay started the still image interstitials felt a bit lacking.

The tutorial was very fun and informative to play, giving the basics of resource management and the all-important combat functions; from how to recruit, unit specialization, equipping and the card element of picking cards to play on your troops during battles to give them special abilities or attributes.

However, once going into the campaign I found it difficult to know just what to do despite being given objectives and I passed many turns with seemingly nothing changing to achieve those objectives. Also, I found some of the on-screen directions and text hard to read, even though you can adjust font settings and the game being played on a 50-inch TV. So, my early enthusiasm during the tutorial cooled-off somewhat.

I give Rising Lords 7 out of 10.
