This is one that is overdue and I should have gotten this uploaded sooner.
Mega Man 6 was released in 1993, one year after Mega Man 5. Unlike the previous Mega Man games, Capcom did NOT publish this one. Nintendo did. It was released to little fanfare. That and this game has a lot of sentimental value to me. Why? This game was what got me into Mega Man to begin with.
The story centers on a world robot tournament and eight were chosen out of them all. But it goes downhill when the guy in charge of it, Mr. X announces that he plans on using them to take over the world. You can pretty much guess how this will turn out right? Mega Man along with Rush go on to stop him and his robots.
Being that this is the last Mega Man game on the NES, there are a few firsts here. For starters, this is the only game in the series where Americans created two of the eight Robot Masters. There was a contest in Nintendo Power where fans can create their own robots and the winning entries would be in Mega Man 6. Makes me wish we had more contests like that.
In addition Mega Man gets a few new upgrades. Rush in this game can’t use Rush Coil or Jet. Instead, he can merge with Mega Man to become one of two different armors: Power and Jet. Power enhances his attack while Jet gives him flight. Beat makes a return but to actually get it, you need to take alternate routes in four different robot master stages. Sadly he has been nerfed from Mega Man 5.
We also are introduced to the Energy Balancer, which the X series gladly added by default. It pretty much lets you collect weapon energy and it is then sent to the weapon with the lowest amount. Useful if you want a refill if things get nuts. This game is also one of the easiest Mega Man games.
With this, the Mega Man Legacy Collection is done. We’ll be moving onto Legacy Collection 2 with Mega Man 7.
