ROB: Robotic Operating Buddy was Ahead of Its Time - Gaming Facts
In the 1985 game Gyromite for the NES, players control Professor Hector as he navigates rooms filled with dynamite. The objective is to defuse the dynamite before time runs out. The game is unique because it utilizes the Robotic Operating Buddy, or R.O.B., an accessory released alongside the NES. Rob is an interactive robot that can communicate with the NES through an infrared sensor. The player must coordinate with Rob to move columns and progress through the levels. Gyromite is one of only two games released for the NES that are compatible with Rob, the other being Stack-Up. The use of Rob was an attempt to differentiate the NES from other gaming consoles and to showcase the system's unique capabilities. While Rob did not gain widespread popularity, it remains a fascinating piece of video game history, and it's an early efforts to introduce novel gameplay experiences and interaction methods.
