ROB (robotic operating buddy) was a little robot toy for the NES that could act as a player 2 for the games Gyromite and Stack Up, he is often described as a trojan horse as he was used to try and shift the idea of the NES away from being yet another video game system (which were failing during the Great Video Game Crash) and towards it being seen as more of a toy that incorporated video game elements as a bonus. While he may not be the only reason why Nintendo grew into such a powerhouse in the video game world, he played a very important part into getting people interested in the system where they would gain much needed trust in the quality of Nintendo games.

I'm pretty sure I heard in another video ages ago that in surveys, R.O.B was actually the main reason listed as to why people bought the system, but I couldn't find much data so you'll just have to trust me lol.
