The Rockets are among a group of teams exploring trade possibilities with the Detroit Pistons to acquire the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, per ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. Houston would appear to be the best positioned of all teams to acquire the selection, if made available, since they could offer the No. 2 pick as part of any package.

Securing the No. 1 choice could give the Rockets or any acquiring team a shot to select the consensus frontrunner among 2021 rookies: Oklahoma State forward Cade Cunningham. From the Pistons’ perspective, if they decide another top prospect such as Jalen Green or Evan Mobley has similar value, it could make sense for them to move down a spot or two and collect additional assets before picking them — since it appears that most teams value Cunningham at the top of the draft.
