Rohan Ramblings 83: in which Gryfflet finally gets to meet Erkenbrand
Gryfflet has spend a quiet week in Grimslade commiserating with the Thane's counsellor Dunward, psyching himself up to interview the prisoner he captured last session. It takes a while to track said prisoner down, and when he does the information gained is not exactly helpful. Gryfflet warns a couple of pertinent people and then reports to Thane Hildith who has an interesting approach to the problem. The subsequent fight is tough but Gryfflet is rescued in the nick of time by Elfhelm, who regrets his harsh words to Hildith's husband Grimbold. She is also regretful and sends Gryfflet out to search for Grimbold, who is presumably still at the Fords of Isen, which Gryfflet finds to be overrun with looters. He deals with them while burying dead Rohirrim, then continues his search which takes him to a nearby Orc-camp to free some prisoners and create some chaos. It then takes him some considerable time to find his next search locus, not helped by a navigational blip and an inconvenient outcrop, and he is somewhat confused by the amount of huge metal equipment littering the camp, but then he is clear to finally locate Grimbold. The latter has fallen into despair but Gryfflet conjures up some images to encourage him and he revives himself enough to seek out Erkenbrand. First of all, however, there is a monstrous Troll blocking the way and the fight is not going their way when they are saved by the fortuitous arrival of Erkenbrand himself in the company of Gandalf. They hurry Gryfflet on his way to Helm's Deep, which would be fine were it no for the enormous-but-deserted Staging Camp siting in plain sight just begging for some havoc. This is not to be, however, so he follows instructions and hastens to report in to Gamling the Old who has been awaiting his arrival for some considerable time. Also awaiting his arrival is Agelwyn from Marton who is curious about her missing townsfolk, so he squeezes in a quick visit to confirm their sad and pointless deaths. This accomplished he is free to explore Helm's Deep, greet some old friends, and perform the inevitable chores which fill up the time until the end of the session.
"It's like every single street in Grimslade is a dead end!"
"That's an interesting gambit!"
"I'm great at protecting people!"
"That's just what I was going to suggest we not do!"
"Hey guys, let me set you free!"
"This one's polished: couldn't I just polish the old one?"
"I think I'm not where the map thinks I am!"
"I guess it helps to pay attention to what's happening!"
"His beloved wife kicking him in the shins is not enough to rouse him?"
"Well, let's count, Legolas!"
"Still rocking the braids, you are making that look manly, my friend!"
Lore was somewhat thin on the ground this week but we did manage to mention JRRT's love for creating languages and talent for naming things, and considered the outcome of a theoretical meeting between Bombadil and Treebeard. We also laid plans for the Professor's upcoming LOTRO Marathon and discussed what we should name the episodes when we get to Gondor.
