Rohan Ramblings 82: in which Gryfflet ticks Elfhelm off his "to meet" list
Gryfflet has been waiting patiently in the Armoury at Grimslade, more impressed by the number of weapons lying about than the child who challenged him to a footrace last week. He continues his exploration of the town, picking up more errands, admiring the architecture, and bringing the footrace to an unsurprising conclusion. He is subjected to a harangue by the absent Thane's mother, surviving almost unscathed, but it does bring up an interesting subject for discussion. In the meantime he proceeds with his errands, which include gathering vegetables and getting rid of marauding half-orcs. On his return he is invited to a Council held by Hildith who is standing in for her husband, the Thane, and detects a possible crack in her stony exterior. She has sent out riders to search for the Thane, and Gryfflet is asked to help them. Initially this goes reasonably smoothly, allowing for more Lore discussion, but then one of his errands proves difficult to advance, requiring more concentration. In the end he tries an alternate course which is less annoying: he gets to meet the famous Elfhelm and partake in some Session Play to explore what happened at the Fords of Isen, not to mention bumping into Gandalf again. Then he finds the final rider who has the bright idea of capturing an Orc from a nearby camp for interrogation, which leads to the interesting discovery of some strangely decorated cheats and unexpected skills on the part of the rider. They report back to Hildith, who is distressed by the news of her husband, but determined not to waste the capture of the half-orc. There is not enough time to press forward, so we briefly consider our options for next week before concluding the session.
"A malodorous but attractively accessorised house!"
"Don't kick your sister!"
"Get out of the cook-pot there, Gryfflet!"
"There still seems to be some revenging in progress here!"
"Well, this doesn't look like it went well!"
"But I don't actually see any camp?"
"How many more plunders do I need?"
Lore discussed this week touched upon the disagreement between Grimbold and Elfhelm and the ramifications thereof, tunes used by the Dwarves, and the tricky subject of "hybrid" people in Middle-earth, including the Fate of the Half-elven.
