Up to a million people saw the majestic sight of three sovereigns of the sea visiting Liverpool at the weekend. Behind the scenes, however, there will be two much smaller boats playing just as vital a role in the Three Queens spectacle.

Barely noticeable in the shadows of Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, Royal Navy patrol vessels HMS Biter and HMS Pursuer will be making sure no over-excited spectators cause the show any problems.

Ceremonial duties will also be performed by units of the British Armed Forces, as the liners known as the 'Three Queens' sailed up the River Mersey.

The Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Victoria and the Queen Mary 2 were gathered as part of the cruise company Cunard's 175th anniversary celebrations.
