A few slight corrections:
- It's not 100% clear whether or not Saban provided funding for the pilot. They were reached out to for funding, and they would've been involved with funding the show if it was green-lit, but their involvement in the funding for the pilot isn't 100% confirmed.
- An anonymous source has told me that the Saban Moon promo was shown at AX95 rather than 98. They add, "They were implementing cel shading, I think this was the very first time it had ever been done automatically. Allen is huge anime nerd and got to know the Gainax guys so he was doing some test Evangelion stuff for them. And he wound up getting involved in the Sailor Moon project through his TV connections (Babylon 5, Seaquest DSV). So a bunch of the effects were going to be 3D rendered, with the big new thing being the 2D animation parts would have 3D effects. Queen Beryl's ship being one of them." The Allen referred to here is Allen Hastings, the person who showed the Saban Moon footage at AX.
