SAINT SWORD セイントソード (JP) for Sega MegaDrive - Complete Playthrough
For our 6th longplay: Saint Sword (セイントソード?) is an action game developed by Cyclone Systems and published by Taito for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991. This time we are in control of a Macress, a swordsman who can transform to a centaur, a winged warrior, or a merman. An evil magician named Gorgan has taken over the whole world, and only we can stop him. We must travel through 7 stages of side scrolling action to get to Gorgan's castle.
My brother and I liked this game growing up. We liked Saint Seiya, and the hero in this game looked like Seiya, wielding a sword. Music is upbeat and catchy, and carries the theme of the game quite well. Graphics is pretty bad, and nothing special.
On the other hand, I personally think this game had a lot of potential. The possibility of what this game could've been is so much more, but the actual execution is mediocre at best. In this game, we simply walk around kill monsters looking for a key, finding the exit, kill a boss if there is one, and repeat. Although transforming into a centaur, an angel, or a merman is helpful at times, it is not necessary to really complete the level. Not terribly exciting.
I imagine Saint Sword could've been like a Metroid/Castlevania like Action RPG ,where Macress starts as a a low level swordsman, and must go through the seven kingdoms laid waste by Gorgan, and seek the lost ancient transformation magic. He would learn the power to become a centaur, to run faster so that he can outrun..maybe a collapsing bridge, using his wings to reach higher places, or swim in to the depths of the unknown as a merman, similar to how Alucard in Castlevania Symphony of The Night (PSX/Konami) uses the powers of wolf, bat and myst to reach previously inaccessible places. All while wearing a cool Saint Seiya inspired Gold Saint Battle Armors.
