The game world is the fictional city of Steelport, and the story focuses on the urban gang war between the Saints and The Syndicate, a rival criminal group. Saints Row: The Third takes place "years after" the events of Saints Row 2. The game begins with the 3rd Street Saints planning to rob a bank in Stilwater. After the execution of the plan goes awry (partly due to Josh Birk tripping a silent alarm), The Protagonist, Shaundi, and Johnny Gat find themselves in prison, only to be bailed out by Viola and Kiki DeWynter following the orders of Phillipe Loren.
