Salvation Army Today - 4.4.2019 - Providing Aid to Refugees at US Border
Since 2014, The Salvation Army in McAllen has worked closely with Catholic Charities, providing meals to their Respite Centers for individuals who have been processed at the US border. Latest reports show over 900 meals served daily.
Recently, Catholic Charities and other non-profits in the city of McAllen have been overwhelmed by the sheer increase in refugees entering the USA.
The City of McAllen, Texas, has requested The Salvation Army provide emergency shelter, food and other services to around 100 refugees per night. Families and individuals being helped have been successfully processed at the border and await transportation to locations in the USA.
“This is the very first time that The Salvation Army here in Hidalgo County has had to house refugees to help with the overflow,” said Captain Stephen Correira, Commanding Officer of The Salvation Army in McAllen. “We serve in the name of Jesus Christ suffering humanity and we serve without discrimination."
