42This was sampled by The Smiths for the amazing song Queen Is Dead. It's from the film The L Shaped Box, a 1960's drama which reflected the kitchen sink drama of that era. It starred Cicely Courtneidge who was an versatile performer in singing, comedy, music hall, and dramatic theatre. I only know her from playing Mrs Butler in the first series of the comedy show On The Buses. Doris Hare was always meant to play Mrs Butler, however she was unavailable at that time. Cicely sadly never felt right to me in the Mrs Butler role. She felt too posh for the Butler family, whereas Doris Hare felt more or acted more working class, and thus more relatable. #thesmiths #britishfilm
