SANKAR INSTITUTE OF POLYTECHNIC was established in July 1958 by Sri S.N.N. Sankaralinga Iyer, a well-known Philanthropist, missionary and Industrialist and Shri TS Narayanaswamy, Industrialist and former Sheriff of Madras, who were the founders of The India Cements Ltd.. The Chief minister of Madras, Shri K.Kamaraj, inaugurated the Polytechnic lighting the kuthuvilakku.
The polytechnic is managed by the India Cements Educational Trust, Chennai. It is a State-Government-Aided institution since inception. It is a co-educational institution. The medium of instruction is English. It offers three-year full-time Diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical, EEE, ECE and Computer Engineering. The Mechanical and EEE courses are offered in Self-supporting Stream also. The polytechnic also offers one-year Post-Diploma Course in Computer Application. All the courses are approved by the AICTE and the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Tamilnadu. Presently, the annual intake sanctioned by AICTE is 420 in I year.
The polytechnic was granted Academic autonomy by the Government of Tamilnadu in 1993 in recognition of its quality of education. It was renamed as SANKAR POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE in 2002 based on Government norms. Our Polytechnic celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1983 and Golden Jubilee in 2008-09. The polytechnic is situated in an area of 120 acres with a built-in area of about 12000 sq M having spacious classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, workshops and other amenities. Standard sports grounds are available for physical education.
