Satazius | Schmup Collection | Wii U Playthrough
2This game is one of four included in the late Wii U release – Shmup collection.
This is a side scrolling shmup done in a retro style. The graphics are sprites and the backgrounds are not filled with bullets like a bullet hell game.
The graphics are a little but too clean so it looks like a Flash game. But overall, the enemy design is good and your ships weapons look great and meaty.
You choose your weapon set at the start of each level and you unlock a new weapon at the end of each level. Playing with the weapon allowed you to level them up by collecting power ups. Some of the side weapons are incredibly useful and you can tactically swap between 2 during gameplay. Unfortunately, if you picked a bad combination at the start of the level, you can’t change the weapon set. Even if you lose all your lives and have to continue.
This game is pretty hard, but fair. There are some very tough spots, especially some very precise moments where you have to squeeze through gaps in walls. I love the fact that if you lose a continue, you just have to start from the last checkpoint as if you lost a life rather than from the beginning of the level. This gives the game a great pace and doesn’t punish you too badly for making a mistake.
The difficulty is somewhat mixed. The bosses are usually quite easy, but the second to last level has some crazy boss rush where they just keep coming. I felt very lucky to do it with one life. Then the last boss is a breeze on the following level.
This is a solid shmup and I enjoyed it. Very cool to have something like this on the Wii U.
