Shopping on popular e-commerce marketplaces should be simple enough; you see a product you like, on a marketplace you trust, and you order it. You should expect to get the best version of that product when you do.
Unfortunately, that's not the case with how many of these marketplaces are set up. In the Refurbished PC space, this is especially relevant. Not all Refurbishers are the same.
If a company invests thousands of dollars into a product or restorative process for production and yields a better product, anyone with a seller account can hijack the product listing and start selling; simply by claiming they have the same product and lowering the price.
This creates a penny war that ultimately rewards sellers with the cheapest products. This, in effect, edges out companies with higher quality processes and products; as no marketplace wants to really put focus on it's sellers (they prefer that you consider the marketplace itself the seller). Most consumers are none the wiser about this "feature" and don't know to check the seller.
This field trip to Toasty Bros was borne from this very e-commerce mechanism. A competitor hijacked a product listing designed and built by Blair Tech, and as it is a branded product, was behaving fraudulently by sending a different product than advertised. Our two teams made the connection and opted to perform something of an expose on the situation.
