Summery:
This quest unlocks after Prologue One, and since you need to reach Level 10 to begin Prologue Two, you'll likely need to complete it to move on in your Archon Quests, but it's also the first Story Quest of the game.

First, you'll need to head to the Knights Headquarters at the back of Mondstadt to meet with Kaeya. You'll end up going back here a lot, and the winding stairs can make it a bit tricky to locate, despite being one of the biggest buildings in the city. If in doubt, go further back and further up, but logging in your memory how to get there this time will help.

Kaeya will ask to speak to you outside, but what he really means is across town, next to the fountains. Head there, and he'll explain about a myserious treasure, and ask you to check out the Adventurer's Guild for intel. Follow the marker there, and ask a couple of people. No one will have any info, but after a while you'll see a cutscene which hints that a nefarious character has overheard you; this is what progresses the story. After this, head back to Kaeya and explain that you've come up dry, and he'll send you to meet an informant.

Leave Mondstadt and travel across the lake; you can just about swim it, but trying to go faster drains your stamina and will make you drown. On the other side, there'll be a bunch of weak enemies to kill, but any area attack should deal with them comfortably. Once they're gone, you'll discover the woman they were attacking was actually your informant; an unfortunately named woman, Vile.

She'll offer you a cryptic clue, and Paimon will suggest you solve it yourself or go ask Kaeya for a clue at the Knight's Headquarters. The treasure is actually at the top of a windmill immediately to the right of the HQ (the right as you exit), so they're both in the same direction, and speaking to Kaeya means it's marked on your map, so he's a good safety. Climbing the windmill takes a bit of planning, as you'll have to stop a couple of times on specific platforms to recover your stamina. Genshin Impact is very like Breath Of The Wild, and this is no different to climbing the towers in Hyrule.

At the top, open the treasure chest to reveal... treasure? Nope, another clue! Again, you can either check in with Kaeya, or head straight to the actual destination, the cliff above the waterfall to the south of Springvale. There are three Cyro columns on that cliff; blast them all with Cryo, and unlock another chest which contains neither a clue nor the treasure, but a map.

No need to check in with Kaeya this time, as Paimon insists you go it alone. The map points to the Falcon Coast, and by the shore ridge you'll find a cave. Enter it - make sure you have at least one Cryo fighter - and defeat the enemies as you go. There's a spinning fire trap which can be just avoided if you're agile enough, but a quick Cyro attack will render it harmless.

At the end of the cave, you'll need to defeat six enemies in one minute to open the door: prioritise clearing the smaller ones first, then use the special attacks on the larger foes.

After this, the nefarious figure who overheard you at the Adventurer's Guild will reveal himself, and mock you for being too slow, while admitting that he didn't find the treasure either. At this point, Kaeya will show up (even if he was in your party), and will try to place the man under arrest. There'll then be a boss battle where you play as Kaeya, against a very slow moving Rain Guard. It packs a decent punch, but is pretty easy to dodge. If you need to cheese it, either let it sweep you near the edge so it throws you up a level, or lead it to the Ressurection Gate where it will get stuck. Stupid Rain Guard.

Once it's defeated, Kaeya will reveal this was all a test to see if he could trust you, and that while the treasure is real, this quest was always a wild goose chase. Even though you explicitly do not tell him when you've found what you think is the treasure, this whole affair does make him trust you, so it seems like you've passed the test. With that, the quest is over.
