Turns out that doing ROTDS blindfolded would be even tougher than I initially thought, and I already thought it would be pretty hard. I would almost certainly need to grind to beat the Insane difficulty setting. I can't use player two menus to my advantage and cut the number of characters I need to distinguish in half, taking away one of the best weapons in my arsenal. In addition, the new menu noises when exiting menus are an enormous pain for this challenge. :P
Getting to the first save point is pretty straightforward, but that's where turd starts to hit the fan. Fireweaver isn't too bad, but he can mess my day up by wrecking a soldier with multiple attacks like he did in my test run. Every time he comes out, I send off one round of attacks. I may be able to get off more sometimes, but I am playing conservatively because it's really easy to hit him once with every character. The guys are using Frozen Beam to hit his weakness, but Aurora can deal significantly more damage with M. Tek Missile. It's important to keep everybody off Slow as much as possible because I can't tell the Soldiers apart. I'm really glad that Rejuvenate heals Slow. If a Soldier is Slowed for a long time, it becomes difficult to tell if he's dead or not. And I really don't want people to die, because without being able to tell the soldiers apart, I have to choose between having both remaining characters use Life Force and reviving the character again for sure (but they will probably die to the next attack) or using Life Force + Rejuvenate on one character (and having a 50% chance of wasting both turns). This will come up again in the Tritoch fight. Thank goodness for M. Tek Barrier; this would be very painful without it.
Tritoch was the only one to kill me in this mini-challenge because I didn't realize he lost the Poison status when he used Bio, so I wasted a lot of time doing no damage on my first run (and got really bad luck besides). On this run, however, I got very lucky and never saw him do anything dangerous at all really. I let Poison do all the work so I can focus entirely on staying alive, which is a variant of a strat I used all the time in my other runs, but it has never fit so naturally. It's important to understand how the Poison mechanics really function in this fight because the "Poisoned LV 1" messages really trick some people. Using Poison Storm multiple times only increases his countdown to the counterattack and does nothing else. Poison tick damage only builds over time. Therefore, I want to use Poison Storm the minimum number of times possible (i.e., only once at the start and after every Rippler), allowing me to maximize my damage output. Tritoch's attacks are nasty too. His third level spells kill a single character outright if they only hit one person (remember how hard reviving is?), although admittedly I'm not sure if he can target a single character with those, and sometimes he can score a kill with multiple attacks as well. If Aurora sustains any damage before or after a multi-target third level spell, she's dead thanks to her low HP. I haven't looked at his script, but I'm pretty sure that the third levels spells are a timed attack, so I can generally predict when they are going to come, and I will never be blown away by too many of them in succession.
Aurora solo in the mines is a pain in the rear. I think I go over it well enough in the video though, so I'll be brief here. None of my attacking spells are ideal for every encounter, and it's hard to tell the enemies here apart. Thankfully, I have enough MP to make it through if I burn my Lemonade.
Every Prinny has a chance of blowing up on some Moogle's face, often killing them instantly. Because of this, I don't want my all-star team (Mog's team) to fight the randoms. Instead, I have the other two teams do the dirty work. Thankfully Mog has Air Guitar by default in ROTDS, so he doesn't need to fight anything to learn a Dance. Since Marshal mostly uses physical attacks, the front row heavy Cloud is dangerous to use in that fight. I did win on my test run with him, but it was close. Mog can hit for better damage from the back, so he's clearly the better choice. The third team isn't even worth considering. Marshal isn't too threatening if I make it to him in good condition. The difficulty comes from actually making it to him in good condition.
