This is a relatively simple mod to improve the audio quality of the model 2 Sega Genesis by replacing the op-amp chips along with a few capacitors. Find some photos of the mod process at the end of the video.
Was it worth it?
Honestly, the improvement in audio quality is... *subtle*. If you're watching this on phone speakers, you probably won't hear any difference. Try with headphones, and listen for slightly less fuzz in the middle registers, and slightly less background analog hum when the music is silent.
In the end, it was worth it for me, because I learned how to use ChipQuik to remove ICs. That's a pretty neat thing to add to my modding skillset.
When I plugged my Genesis into the CRT I use for my regular retro gaming, I could hear no difference at all. I belatedly realized my 2006 Toshiba has terrible 2.5W speakers, which led me to upgrade with some old magnetically-shielded 6.1 PC speakers by Logitech. That made the real difference. :P
