To clear the hairpin turns in the Mountain, Snowy, and Riviera stages, shift to second gear and brake to force the car to turn harder. Additionally, one of the last asphalt corners in the Mountain stage can be cleared easier by shifting down to third (listen for the navigator's "open hairpin left" call.) Otherwise, leave the car in 4th and if you are about to run wide in a corner, simply release the gas.
Colliding with cars and walls will obviously reduce your speed, but in addition to these hazards, touching the water on Desert, jumping the tall curbs on Mountain, or falling in the ruts along the edges of the road on Snowy will also cause you to lose speed or even crash into a wall, costing precious time.
