Last December, during the game awards, SEGA released a trailer for a new campaign they called the Power Surge in which they plan to remake or produce contemporary entries for five dormant classic SEGA franchise, including games for: Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi!

At first, this seemed like really big news because it’s been a long time since we’ve seen SEGA deal with these classic IPs and this is exactly the sort of thing SEGA fans have wanted from SEGA for over 20 years. We’ve always wanted SEGA to innovate, yes, but it would have also been good to see the characters and games, that made the brand great in the first place, get some attention or updates.

However, upon closer examination of what SEGA is proposing here, I realize that things aren’t really what they seem and, really, SEGA isn’t actually doing anything all that different from what they’ve already been doing over the last 5 years or so. More to the point, people need to realize most of these games, all except one in fact, are probably not even going to be developed by SEGA, and given SEGA’s recent history, we have very good reason to doubt whether or not any of this will mean what we’re all hoping it means…..that somehow SEGA is “back” and that they’re poised to be as awesome as they once were before Sammy bought the brand back in 2003-2004.

Astute fans have already figured out that Lizard Cube and probably Dotemu will be doing Shinobi, which is very good news, but a game developer called Komi is likely handling the new Streets of Rage Revenge. That’s not the worst news ever, but it’s not exactly promising and its very unlikely that Komi is going to meet the incredible expectations surrounding the Streets of Rage series.

Anyway, SEGA’s done this before. Panzer Dragoon and House of the Dead both got mediocre remakes over the last few years, while Lizard Cube/DotEmu put out great updates to Wonderboy III and Streets of Rage.
The difference, now, is just that SEGA has cleverly marketed this as NEW.

But I’m no so sure.

Thanks for watching!
