It genuinely took ten hours, 1/4 of my play time, between unlocking this fight and defeating it. I'd estimate some 60 or so attempts. I took some detours via Demon of Hatred, unlocking prosthetics, and the inevitable sen and resurrective power grinds that were needed. I also got a fair amount of skill points in the process, used with the Dancer's mask. In the end, I had 17 vitality and 14 attack power. Seven prayer necklaces wasn't much, so I died quickly with any missteps. It really took a lot to learn phase 3/4 in particular because I'd relied on recovering posture with the double ichimonji which is completely unsafe once Isshin pulls out the spear. I still get punished almost every time I use it in these phases - old habits die hard, I guess. The one death was when I did a perfectly timed mikiri counter input while not realising I was still splooted on the ground and so I ate the thrust anyway. The Genichiro part was a bit clumsy as is customary for the first few fights of the session - amazingly, this was the first! In any case, I can truly be proud of this win.
