-Map Review-
King Asleep in Mountain takes the previous level and puts it on overdrive! Just like the second level of the mappack, I think this level absolutely blows everything away in terms of the aesthetics and mood! The music is absolutely great and in general an AMAZING presentation in graphics!
The level has pretty cool fights in all kinds of arenas with horizontality and verticality (often times a mix of both)! Though it does make the mistake of 'spawning monsters in your face', which is a typical thing which some mapmakers do which, sometimes does add to the fun 'for jumpscares', othertimes it just makes mobs unavoidable and imo is not a good practice!
Some of the jumping puzzles need some tweaking. Sam is not tall enough to jump over some, and it requires a lot of deliberate jumpspams and parkour to reach the next boulder (sam has short arms and shorter legs ok). Also perhaps make it more clear for the player where to go next instead of having the player do guesswork!
The level layout needs some work, but overall the design is nice! The hints are not really good at letting you know that you need two 'books' (instead of crystals?). Maybe they glitched as they do not resemble or have anything to do with the crystals. The books are easily hidden in the map and blend in perfectly with the background "w h y". It confounded me for quite a long time until I realised that the book was hidden in the corner of two parts of the map 😔.
I think that needs some changing. Imo it would've been better if the book was placed in the church altar and the altar where you pick up the yellow crystal instead. Since if you miss it you need to go through the entire map again to the previous point (the final part of the map loops around to the beginning where you have to jump off a cliff which makes the rest of map behind u inaccessible unless you go all the way from the start.).
Note: you need to get two books and then place two crystals at the pedestals in front of the 'teleporter' to finish the level.
-Campaign Review-
Crystal Impact is a very compelling mappack resulting from the Khreth's Mapping Competition. Officially endorsed by Croteam, the mappack pulls punches beyond what the Serious Engine 3 normally advertised itself as. The mappack hits hard in aesthetics and t r a n s f o r m s the game into something of a huge eyecandy. With levels made from multiple really talented people, I genuinely found the mappack to be a great treat.
Though with that said, as every map was made by different people, each level does have its own uh theme. and the style is never really too consistent. Some levels feel like campaigns, some feels like pre-arrangements of lots of assets, whilst others feel like survival maps. Irregardless of that, the mappack is ultimately tied together really nicely and I love it. The plot is good, and there's always hints and messages which give lore and content. See, when the level shines, it absolutely pushes the engine to its creative limits which is just Awe aspiring.Good Work authors
A lot of the custom enemies appear in the mappack and I have to say they are VERY unique. And It's so nice to see enemies from the original game clad to the theme, like the headmen which shoot bows or the guffy's which lob medieval canonballs instead of future projectiles.
