Session Skate Sim -x- The ANIMATRIX | Unrealistic but still a tiny bit realistic montage
*LORE, TIMESTAMPS, AND SOURCE VIDEO BELOW*
Wow I had a LOT of fun making this, this project has been on my list for almost a year, can you imagine? I loved The Animatrix as a kid, each episode had this air of mystery around it, and I felt like just watching the episodes was letting me peek at some hidden life secrets. This particular episode was just called "Kid's Story" (link below). Of course, the episode about a skater just skating for his life, stuck with me for the rest of my life.
small detail: The KID in the video seems to be regular but also skates goofy a lot so I kinda didn't bother. I skate goofy so any regular-stance skating you see is switch for me.
*TIMESTAMPS*
0:40 - skating starts
0:52 - switch Laserflip Front Noseslide FS 270 out
1:32 - Treflip Crooks to BS Smith down handrail
1:46 - Kickflip FS wallride down a 20-stair
2:09 - Clean Varial Double-Heel down a double set in a line
2:24 - Gap to switch 50-50 Leap of Faith with "Matrix Slowmo" lol
4:08 - The FALL
5:12 - Self-substantiation
*LORE* (+ a bit of head-cannon)
In the lore, the Kid and Dan David (the runner from another of the episodes) were two of the exceedingly rare people who achieved self-substantiation, pulling themselves out of the matrix without any external help. This is to be taken as nothing short of a human performing a miracle. Neo didn't do it himself, he took the pill which led to it. In the KID's case, he was so convinced that the world he lived in was a dream, and his faith in Neo was so strong, that he didn't die in real life upon dying in the matrix. His brain instead triggered the "wake up from your dream an instant before you die" effect.
I'm glad I have Session, with its replay editor and the wide variety of maps and environments (I'm on console so everything I make is on the vanilla version) that let me explore outside the box of skate-related montage. And I went as deep as I could into the symbolism and references to the source material, with the skating obviously, but also the environment and the clothing. These homage videos are a way for me to interact with this media that I always loved, to rediscover them and be immersed in them once again.
Also, it was great trying to experiment with cinema-style action filming and attempting to mix it with skate filming tech. Some shots look a bit wonky but overall I'm very satisfied and feel like I pulled it off. I kinda abused the Dolly Zoom lol but wtv.
