Shadow of the Beast (Amiga) – 50 Hz vs 100 Hz | Smooth Scrolling & CRT Look | Near-Perfect Sync
This video aims to reproduce as closely as possible the feel of playing Shadow of the Beast on an authentic CRT display.
The 50 Hz version is shown without shaders or post-processing, while the 100 Hz version takes advantage of the higher refresh rate to greatly reduce motion blur and practically eliminate ghosting during fast scrolling.
🚨 Important: Due to YouTube’s limitations on frame rates and bitrate, the final video quality does not fully represent the smoothness and clarity achievable in the emulator itself. For the best experience and to fully appreciate the shader details, watch this video in full-screen mode at the highest available resolution.
A “Catode” shader has been applied to simulate the look of a CRT, combined with adjustments to color curves, brightness, and contrast to match the visual characteristics of an original Amiga on a high-quality CRT monitor.
Due to my capture device not supporting recording at such a high refresh rate, I had to limit the video to 100 Hz.
I believe the optimal refresh rate for the smoothest and most stable image is around 150–200 Hz, depending on your monitor. A VRR-capable monitor is ideal for this.
As long as your refresh rate is a multiple of 50 (50, 100, 150, 200, etc.), the scrolling will stay perfectly synchronized with the monitor, just like on a real Amiga CRT.
If you’re emulating an Amiga and want to experience smooth, stutter-free motion, set your monitor’s refresh rate to a multiple of 50.
⚠️ Notice: Refresh rates of 60 Hz or multiples thereof tend to produce micro-stuttering, which negatively affects smoothness during fast scrolling.
(Funny thing is… most people who complain about this on the Amiga either never had one, or are running their emulator with the wrong settings 😏).
Software used:
➔ WinUAE 6.0.0 — Best Amiga emulator — www.winuae.net/download/
➔ Lossless Scaling (LSFG x2) — High-quality upscaling and FG — store.steampowered.com/app/993090/Lossless_Scaling/
➔ ReShade — With Catode shader, Clarity, RGB curves, and color correction filters for brightness, contrast, and saturation — reshade.me
Tested on a monitor with VRR and FreeSync Pemium support, up to 165 Hz.
⚠️ Typo spotted! Yes, I know "Enulation" appears in the video instead of "Emulation." Classic keyboard betrayal 😅 what can I say, age and eyesight aren’t what they used to be! 🤓
