É o terceiro jogo da série Shantae, seguindo Shantae: Risky's Revenge. Foi lançado na América do Norte para o eShop do 3DS em 23 de outubro de 2014 e para o eShop do Wii U em 25 de dezembro de 2014, e nas regiões PAL em ambas plataformas em 05 de fevereiro de 2015. O jogo foi depois transportado para PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Amazon Fire TV, e Nintendo Switch. O jogo segue as aventuras da meio-gênio epônima Shantae enquanto ela mais uma vez deve salvar Sequin Land de um novo inimigo, o Pirate Master, com a ajuda de sua nêmesis Risky Boots.
O título contém uma nova trilha sonora por Jake Kaufman e arte adicional por Inti Creates. Recebido com clamor pela crítica, assim como os dois primeiros títulos da série, o jogo foi nomeado para melhor jogo de 3DS e melhor plataforma pela IGN e atingiu o Top 10 da pesquisa de 2014 da Club Nintendo para jogos favoritos do público. Também foi comercialmente bem-sucedido. Um quarto jogo na série, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, foi lançado em 20 de dezembro de 2016.
'Shantae and the Pirate's Curse' is a platform video game developed by WayForward Technologies for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. It is the third game in the Shantae series, following Shantae: Risky's Revenge. It was released in North America for the 3DS eShop on October 23, 2014 and for the Wii U eShop on December 25, 2014, and in PAL regions on both platforms on February 5, 2015. The game was later ported for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Amazon Fire TV, and Nintendo Switch. The game follows the adventures of the eponymous half-genius Shantae as she must once again save Sequin Land from a new enemy, the Pirate Master, with the help of her nemesis Risky Boots.
The title contains a new soundtrack by Jake Kaufman and additional art by Inti Creates. Received with critical acclaim, like the first two titles in the series, the game was nominated for best 3DS game and best platform by IGN and reached the Top 10 in Club Nintendo's 2014 poll of audience favorites. It was also commercially successful. A fourth game in the series, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, was released on December 20, 2016.
