Sheltered / Build-a-Van Challenge
Sheltered is a Post-Apocalyptic Survival game that focuses on maintaining equipment, handling basic human functions, gathering resources to upgrade and build more efficient furnishings and just staying alive.
That said it also has a relatively easy learning curve with a built-in tutorial, but keeps a strong understanding of permadeath, and no scum saving. If you lose a person, there is no going back, and I find that thoroughly enjoyable.
While I love casual games that also handle and simulate basic human life, I also have a strong attachment to the survival mentality and seeing if I can make it alone or be able to achieve something.
With that said I had made this playthrough a Build-a-Van challenge to see if I can survive in 30 days time, and let me tell you, the game was ruthless and surprised me at the very end with it going ahead and making me go through every emotion and strategy.
So while playing in the very beginning the main goal is to grab scrap.
So grab everything they place in front of you and then run back home to use it in building, upgrading, and needing to build more storage to repeat the process.
Am I going to say it is riveting and action-packed game play!
No.
It is a resource management game at heart, that loves to sprinkle in multiple genres, and does it very well.
Cleaning, and resource management, because if you have a dirty place, the rats will show up, and you need to have a spring, metal, and piece of wood to build that trap to kill it, and store its meat in the fridge you made.
Turn-Based strategy, as I am an advent Pokémon player and also seeing if you can survive the Ursine that wonder the woods.
Basic human interaction, a dying art in real life, and is shown all the same in where you try to see if a person wants to barter good, try to join your faction, or will bully you into fight or flight.
This game takes every element and make a solid attempt at it, and succeeds!
That’s why I love the game and it is safely in my cozy game library, the type of game that I could unwind with or play a little absent mindedly and can succeed or play a little carelessly and still bounce back.
It does have stronger and more difficult settings and even a few story modes that look really interesting, so be on the lookout for those in the future.
But for myself I just wanted to go normal, and I know that is too casual but I wanted to start the New Year with a resolution and a good warm up of a good game.
My goal this year is to have a new game shown and uploaded every month, and I got a little carried away and wanted to make it a baker’s dozen, and there is no better game I can think of then Sheltered.
So what does that mean, it means when I uploaded this game I also just uploaded then entire playthrough, so check it out and let me know what you think about it?

I say you should if you love 8-bit graphics, resource management, a fun open-procedurally generated world, and want to dip your toe in basic turn-based strategy combat.
Do your best to survival the cruel world and thrive!
