Shenmue (Dreamcast XBox One) YTF is Yu Sukuzi's AAA JRPG Such a Slog?
1I purchased Shenmue when it launched on the Dreamcast. I was flummoxed by how tedious and unpolished it was. The dialogue was awful, the spoken English audio was poorly recorded and performed. The “gameplay” involved a lot of traversal between narrative triggers, featuring conversations with the godawful audio and script I mentioned.
Most of the interactions outside of conversation and traversal involved those infamous “Quick Time Events”, where the objective was “Press X to Not Die”. Flashcard gaming.
Because most of the gameplay loop was based on keeping appointments with NPCs and travelling between them, the game’s “realtime” simulated clock was integral to your progress. So you sometimes had to kill time doing other tedious stuff until your appointment was ready to advance the game.
The only “fun” to be had was going to a virtual arcade and playing poorly emulated versions of bad Sega games like Space Harrier.
After several hours of looking for ANYTHING compelling to do, I gave up. As a big fan of JRPGs, I could not have been more disappointed.
