The story begins in 1986 when a Chinese man named Lan Di enters the dojo of Iwao Hazuki. Lan Di is after a mysterious artifact known as the Dragon Mirror. When Iwao Hazuki refuses to cooperate, things take a turn for the worse. Several days later after recovering from the incident Ryo sets out to not only get revenge on Lan Di but to also uncover the mysteries surrounding the Dragon Mirror and his father’s past. Ryo must not only learn these hidden secrets but also learn how to truly fight if he is to stand any chance against Lan Di.

Originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and 2001, Shenmue is an open world action adventure combining jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, RPG elements, and memorable mini-games. It pioneered many aspects of modern gaming, including open world city exploration, and was the game that coined the Quick Time Event (QTE). It was one of the first games with a persistent open world, where day cycles to night, weather changes, shops open and close and NPCs go about their business all on their own schedules. Its engrossing epic story and living world created a generation of passionate fans, and the game consistently makes the list of “greatest games of all time”.

The original Shenmue was the most expensive video game ever developed at the time, with an estimated production and marketing cost of US$47 to $70 million, though some of the development also covered Shenmue II. Despite attracting positive reviews and a cult following, the games were commercial failures.

Shenmue is developed by Sega AM2 and AM R&D Dept. #2. Shenmue is Published by Sega.

The games are being ported with the help of British studio d3t. Shenmue I & II were released on August 21, 2018.
