Programming is sometimes taught as a collection of prescriptive design patterns to be applied as appropriate to the problem at hand. This isn't the way I learned, nor is it the mental model I tend to use, but in certain puzzles like this one, that kind of thinking could provide a shortcut to certain efficient solutions. I suspect the predominance of some of these conventional solutions is due to this sort of thing.
