REVIEW | Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, or Fushigi no Dungeon: Fuurai no Shiren 6 Togurojima no Tankenroku, is a roguelike RPG adventure title for the Nintendo Switch, the latest in the Mystery Dungeon series from Spike Chunsoft. The series started all the way back in 1993 for the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo/SNES with Enix's Torneko no Daibouken, and is one of the most beloved RPG franchises in Japan.

This is an in-depth review with minimal story spoilers for Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. There have been a steady stream of Shiren releases over the past decade, but this recently released title is the first brand new adventure in the series in over a decade. While it includes some modern touches like expanded online features, stream-friendly display options and quality of life improvements, Shiren 6 is for the most part a return to its roots, a tough-as-nails, procedurally-generated dungeon crawling RPG that is unfair at times, but gives the player a great sense of accomplishment when they finally see success.

This is a review of the Japanese version, but the game has been localized in English and other languages.
