This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows for the Wii U. Plague of Shadows is a free DLC expansion to the original Shovel Knight game.

I downloaded Shovel Knight on its release date last year and played through the entire game on my Wii U. It was loads of fun and really challenging too. I posted my full playthrough of the game as well (available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjVzi18SAlg).

I'm a huge fan of 2D action platformers, so Shovel Knight definitely struck a chord with me. The game had some excellent level design and mechanics based on a variety of old NES games, although I would say it's actually harder than most NES games. The music was really good too.

I needed a good excuse to play through the game again, so when Yacht Club Games announced that they were releasing a free expansion allowing us to play through a remixed version of the game using Plague Knight, I knew I couldn't pass the opportunity up.

I died 56 times in my prior playthrough, although the majority of those were on the last couple of stages. Most of that had to do with me learning the mechanics and figuring out how to complete the stages. It'll be interesting to see if I die fewer times in this playthrough.

I'm still getting used to the new attacking and platforming mechanics, but so far I've noticed that the ranged bomb attacks and double/triple jumps seem to make Plague Knight more powerful than Shovel Knight. I'll see if that holds true for the rest of the game.

Also, for some reason the game didn't automatically unlock the Plague Knight expansion even though I've beaten the original game. I had to input a cheat code to unlock this feature. It must be some sort of glitch.

In this first part I started a new save file and completed the first stage.

Recorded with the Elgato Game Capture HD60 and the Wii U's HDMI cable at native 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second.

I'm using a Wii Remote.
