When I was a kid, one of my favorite types of game to play was the so-called "2.5D platformer", in which your character would explore a linear path that wound through a fully-rendered 3D world. Feeling nostalgic, I recently looked up some of those games hoping to relive the memories...

...Except it turns out that the Internet doesn't exactly agree with my memories. According to Google and Wikipedia, games like Donkey Kong Country are what's *really* 2.5D, and my childhood favorites like Klonoa and Kirby 64 don't have a label at all.

Who's right? Well, obviously me, but I don't expect you to take it on faith. Let's briefly review the concept of "2.5D" and settle once and for all what the term really means.
