2Side-Scrolling Puzzle Game LIMBO (2010) Review: Limbo is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer initially released in 2010 by Danish developer Playdead. But is Limbo still worth playing in 2020? Hi, I’m Buzz_M1, and the answer is, yeah, sure, if you can get it on sale for a buck fifty. That’s what it went for a recent summer sale, anyway.
As far as Limbo itself, minimalist is the word. You’re a 2-d boy, and you’re trapped in this bizarre and dangerous dream world. Apparently, you’re looking for your sister, but I didn’t get that from playing the game itself—it says that in the advertising copy, and yes there is a girl character you eventually encounter who I guess is supposed to be your sister. But as far as why you’re looking for her, and why some of the other children are trying to kill you, we don’t know.
Gameplay-wise, you can move left or right along the ground, or up and down along ladders. You also get a jump and the ability to interact with objects you find in various ways—you can push or pull certain objects, hang and swing from ropes, flip switches and push buttons, etc. As far as the puzzles, most of them are fair, and the more challenging puzzles are satisfying when you finally solve them. Fortunately, most of Limbo’s puzzles are of the nice and clean variety.
